Security FAQ

How Project Onyx approaches security and privacy.

Is Project Onyx open source?

No. Project Onyx is currently closed source.

This is an intentional decision to protect platform security, allow rapid iteration during active development, and prevent abuse while the platform matures. While the source code is not public, Project Onyx provides transparency around its architecture, data practices, and security principles.

How is my data protected?

Project Onyx uses encrypted connections across the platform and limits data collection to what is necessary to operate the service.

Access to platform-level systems and data is restricted to authorized Project Onyx staff and is used only for maintenance, security, debugging, and user support.

Are my messages private?

Project Onyx does not sell, share, or analyze message content for advertising or profiling.

Private communications are not actively monitored. Limited access to technical data may occur only when required to resolve issues, investigate abuse reports, or maintain platform stability.

Does Project Onyx sell or share user data?

No.

Project Onyx does not sell, rent, or share user data with third parties. User data is not used for advertising, tracking, or analytics.

Data is disclosed only if legally required and only to the extent necessary to comply with the law.

What data do you actually collect?

Project Onyx collects:

  • An email address for account creation and authentication
  • Limited technical data such as IP address and connection metadata for security and operational purposes

Project Onyx does not require real names, phone numbers, or personal profiles.

Who can access user data?

Only authorized Project Onyx platform staff.

Community owners, moderators, and other users do not have access to platform-level data or administrative systems.

Do you log voice or video calls?

Project Onyx does not record voice or video calls.

Temporary technical metadata may be processed to support real-time communication and maintain service quality, but content itself is not stored or reviewed.

How do you handle security issues or vulnerabilities?

Project Onyx takes security concerns seriously.

If a vulnerability is discovered:

  • It is investigated promptly
  • Fixes are prioritized based on risk
  • Updates are deployed as quickly as practical

Users are encouraged to report security concerns through official support channels.

Can law enforcement access my data?

Project Onyx does not provide user data voluntarily.

Data may only be disclosed if required by law, such as through a valid court order or lawful request, and only the minimum necessary data will be provided.

Where is Project Onyx hosted?

Project Onyx is hosted on virtual private server infrastructure.

Infrastructure choices prioritize isolation, control, and the ability to scale responsibly while maintaining privacy standards.

Is Project Onyx secure if it's still in beta?

Project Onyx is in active testing, which means:

  • Features may change
  • Bugs may exist
  • Systems are actively evolving

Reasonable security practices are in place, but no system can be guaranteed to be completely risk-free. Users should understand this when participating in beta testing.

Will Project Onyx ever be open source?

Possibly, but no commitment has been made.

Any decision to open source part or all of Project Onyx would be made carefully and intentionally, with security and sustainability as the priority.
